City Island

“City Island” is written and directed by Raymond De Felitta. It’s a family comedy, set in the quaint harbor community in the Bronx, starring Andy Garcia. The comedy, which won the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival Heineken Audience Award, also stars Julianna Margulies, Alan Arkin and Emily Mortimer. Each member of a crazy New York family holds his/her own lie, which builds laughter throughout the film as each secret eventually unravels. FREE Income Tax Prep

University Neighborhood Housing Program (UNHP) will continue offer FREE Income Tax Preparation Services to low and moderate income residents for the 3rd consecutive year. As a result of our partnership with Ariva, last year many residents were able to keep their entire refunds. During two Saturdays at our tax site, 72 returns were completed, totaling $167,951 in refunds. Of these returns 33 clients qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit, yielding $65,541, 39% of total refund. The average adjustable Gross income for those we helped was $13,800 and typically, families received over $2,000 in refunds.

Returns are e-filed, which means clients that opt for direct deposit will receive returns in as little as 10 days, without having to pay unnecessary Rapid Anticipation Loans (RAL), Pay Stub Loan or/and costly tax preparation fees. Service is available for individuals and families whose gross income in 2009 was $56,000 or less. Tax program is conducted from Refuge House: 2751 Bainbridge Ave, Bronx 10458.Our services are provided on 10 days from January through April by professionally trained Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) preparers on Wednesdays (from 1:00-7:00 PM) and Saturdays (from 10:00-4:00 PM): Sat 1/23, Wed 2/03, Sat 2/06, Wed 2/17, Sat 2/27, Wed 3/03, Wed 03/24, Sat 03/27, Wed 4/07 and Sat 4/10.
