Parents Corner- Sex Education in the Classroom

Did you know that sex ed, as of now, isn’t a required part of the NYC curriculum? Do you feel that this is a good thing or that it should be required as part of your kid’s education? If you are in support of sex ed in the classroom, Planned Parenthood has a campaign going, and they need your help!

BUT-before we tell you about it, read these alarming facts:

  • In NYC about one in three NYC high school students are currently sexually active,
  • One in five report having four or more sex partners so far in their lifetime.
  • Only one-third of them report using condoms
  • One in five girls did not use any form of birth control at all the last time they had sex!

Planned Parenthood Of New York City is currently organizing NYC parents to make sure sex ed is being taught in our schools. Their campaign is called We’re Going to the Principal’s Office- they are trying to empower parents to talk with their principals about getting sex ed into schools and ask that interested parents get in touch with them so that they can send materials to help parents through the process. The first thing Planned Parenthood will do to help parents is send them a copy of their “Parent Tool Kit.” After parents review the Tool Kit and are ready to schedule a meeting with their principal, they will receive a copy of the “Principal Packet”. This packet is shorter, and is meant to be handed over to the principal at the time of the meeting. It contains basic information about the key sex ed stats and an overview of the curriculum available and the DOE trainings and resources available.

Come on Bronx!

Now in its fourth year, Make Music New York, “the largest music event ever to grace Gotham” (Metro New York), is a unique festival of free concerts in public spaces throughout the five boroughs of New York City, all on Monday, June 21st, the first day of summer. MMNY takes place simultaneously with similar festivities in more than 327 cities around the world — a global celebration of music making.

From 11 in the morning to 10 at night, public spaces throughout the five boroughs — sidewalks, parks, community gardens, and more — become impromptu musical stages, dance floors, and social meeting points. Thousands of amateur musicians, in every genre, perform on sidewalks for the biggest crowds of their lives. Professional musicians perform for new audiences, who come out from under their headphones to hear unfamiliar groups risk-free. And everyone is invited to sing along and enjoy the first day of summer.

Make Music NY wants to increase the participation in the Bronx! So if you or someone you know has a business, community center, or space outdoors here in the Bronx and would like to have musicians perform there FREE for a day, register today!

Outside of the Bronx: MSG and Radio City Music Hall Tours!

Bronx Mama on stage at Radio City Music Hall!

Bronx Mama recently had the chance to experience both the Madison Square Garden All Access Tour and Radio City Music Hall’s Stage Door Tour! While there are so many awesome things going on in the Bronx, its always great to jump on the train and head downtown every once in a while. And for anyone with kids who are into sports or music-these tours are a great way to spend some family time together.

BronxMama was able to take a peek inside a luxury box-overlooking the arena at MSG and watch as a crew set up for the John Mayer concert and discover exactly how stars come from under the stage at Radio City Music Hall.

No tour is the same-being that there is always something different going on! Whether you get to experience a real live sound check by an artist performing later in the day, or watch the basketball court being constructed on top of the ice-its something you must experience.
