Annual Urban Environmental Challenge

The UEC is a 10k race hosted by the Van Cortlandt Track Club that takes runners through all of the undiscovered trails through Van Cortlandt Park. This race is always fun and runners can expect to get a little muddy, with the odd stream crossing (log bridge optional) but it’s a great introduction to trail running! The race will be on April 3rd at 10:00 AM and will start at the Tortoise and the Hare statue in Van Cortlandt Park on Broadway (only steps from the 242nd St. stop on the #1 subway).  You can register at the link below. Register soon as they expect to cap this race because the trails can’t accommodate too many runners.  Fast runners with too many plastic trophies need not fear.  Prizes are the best carrot cakes in the city, (from the famous www.lloydscarrotcake.com) given to top 3 places in all male and female age groups. See the website for more details and a video of last year’s race.

Wave Hill Events: February 24–March 4

With the sun pouring through my window, open a crack to the glorious – yes, glorious — winter gardens of Wave Hill beyond, I can’t think of a better outlet than creating a miniature, tabletop landscape, a promise of green to take me through the last few weeks of this cold, dormant season of the year, at one of our terrarium workshops Thursday and Saturday. (And I am thinking that the terrarium workshop Thursday will be a wonderful President’s Week activity.)  Indoors, our winter workspace residency program has brought Glyndor Gallery to life, offering another naturally creative focus for artist and visitor. Some of the Winter Workspace public programs are drop-in, but many require registration (though they are free), just because enthusiasm for the program is running high. This past weekend families seem to have divided their time between the Family Art Project—another winner this weekend—and activities in the Winter Workspace. Continue reading
